The Self-Powered Home helps US homeowners choose home batteries, solar generators and portable power stations that actually fit their house. Most spec sheets talk in watts and watt-hours. Most people just want to know: will this keep my fridge cold and my internet on through the night?
So that's how we write. Every guide starts with what you want to keep running, then works back to the size and the product.
How we research
We don't run a test lab, and we don't claim hands-on testing. Our guides are built from manufacturer specifications, published prices, owner reviews and independent sources such as the U.S. Department of Energy, Ready.gov and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. When a product changes or a newer model comes out, we update the guide.
For anything that connects to your home's electrical panel, we always tell you to use a licensed electrician. We never recommend back-feeding or running fuel-powered generators indoors.
How we make money
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. If you buy through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes which product we recommend, and we don't accept free products in exchange for coverage.
Privacy
We don't sell personal data. Our server keeps standard access logs (IP address, page, time) for security and to count visits. Amazon may set its own cookies when you click a product link; see Amazon's privacy notice for details.
